EIP-AGRI Wheat Trials
The Farmer Scientist Network has successfully secured grant funding through the European Innovation Partnership (EIP-AGRI) to deliver a spring wheat trial over a two year period. A growing area of concern within farming is the existing legislation driving the withdrawal of a number of pesticides.
Research into viable alternatives for the arable sector is limited and the Farmer-Scientist Network spring wheat trial aims to address this. Currently there are various biopesticides that are used in the horticultural industry, but not many of these have been adapted for use within arable crops. This project will identify gaps in knowledge that might be causing biopesticides to be less efficient in arable crops and demonstrate how biopesticide technology can be transferred from horticulture to arable crops. Trials will be run to contrast existing crop protection practices with practices reliant only on biopesticides on arable farms in the North East and Yorkshire in a range of agronomic conditions, with the aim to understand how these new technologies can affect yield and quality. The aim is to use products on micoorganisms, botanicals and semiochemicals from seed treatment to harvest as a series of intervention coinciding with pest and disease occurrence.
The project will run the series of trials over two seasons (Spring 2017 until 2019) with members of the Farmer Scientist Network working collaboratively to develop the management programmes, to host the trials and share results and experiences.
